Schnitzel & Things

Rating:

3out4

Location: Varies (follow www.twitter.com/schnitzeltruck)

Price: $8 Schnitz Burger / $10 Schnitz Burger with 2 sides

As I’ve been using twitter to track food trucks throughout NYC, I’d been especially excited to try out the Schnitzel & Things Truck.  I’d been tracking these guys for a solid 2 months or so and I keep hearing about how long the line has been especially since these guys took rookie of the year at the 2009 Vendy Awards.  Getting there early at about noon the line was only about 4-5 people long.  I got the Schnitz Burger w/ a side of potato salad and cucumber salad.  I didn’t get an option of how I wanted it cooked but, it ended up about medium cooked.  The burger its self was resting on a nicely toasted bun w/ cheese & pesto mayo.  The meat is about a half pound patty with a lightly fried batter around it.  The schnitz burger doesn’t exactly taste like a typical burger but, does have quite a juicy meaty taste to it.  Maybe the frying part of the process makes the flavor change a bit?  Not sure.  Very filling and enough to get the burger craving out of my system but, certainly not the best burger I’ve had in the city.  I’ll have to try the chicken Schnitzel next time,

The Story Behind The Silver Spork

So, you might be asking yourself, ” Why the Silver Spork? What’s up with that?”  Where do I start…

Well one night, after a long conservation over drinks, my friends and I decided we needed a food blog to record our tasty adventures around NYC. Great! But what would we call it??? Something different, catchy, and tasteful but not cliche or tacky. And voila!  The Silver Spork was born. Ok ok, let me me explain further.

The spork is a highly underrated eating utensil that is rare on the mean streets of New York, (it’s actually highly overrated, but we thought it would be catchy). Silver, well like all great silverware that chracterizes class and elegance, silver added the touch of greatness the spork needed. Thus, the Silver Spork.

Lunch: Margon’s Cuban Sandwich (10.20.09)

It’s Tuesday afternoon and I’m itching for something that’ll coat my insides. I’m about to embark on a long awaited visit to the Margon Restaurant Corp, which has been talked amongst friends for months. Margon is known to have their highly coveted Cuban Sandwich…we shall see about this little warlock.

UPDATE –  A very solid Cuban sandwich. Utterly satisfying for a quick and cheap bite. This little devil consists of inhouse-roasted pork, genoa salami, and Boars Head ham. It’s topped with swiss cheese, sliced pickles, and Margon’s special mojo sauce (which is actually just spicy mustard and mayo). All this is served between hot pressed Cuban bread with a touch of butter and a hint of garlic.  Great for a meal on the go. Warning! Think twice about wearing that business suit or new jacket if you want to dine in. You might come out smelling like their cuban roasted chicken or pork chops.

Margon Cuban Sandwich

We give it a 4 out of 5 silver sporks. While the sandwich was mighty tasty, and rather light for such heavy meat and condiments, it wasn’t quite “life changing.”  5 silver sporks are reserved for those most heavenly treats and Bar Rafaeli. Yes, her.

Till next time friends,
Mike

Hello world!

This is your friendly neighborhood spider-man, aka Mike, saying, “hello!” I’m a relativly new transplate to NYC by way of Chicago. Yes, Chicago! The home of the deep dish pizza and tasty vienna beef hot dogs. As NYC has the tendancy to do, I’ve become quite the “foodie” and a broke patron of manhattan. As a result, I’ve decided to dedicate a blog to cheap-eats in and out of NYC.

So here’s how it goes:
1) All meals must be under$10.00
2) #1 is the only rule 🙂

Rating Scale:
All foods will be rated on a silver spork basis (1-5 silver sporks).
1 = Nasty, will never touch, tastes like death
2 = Will eat only if under the influence
3 = Nothing special but edible. normal, everyday food.
4 = Wow. yummy. etc.
5 = Life changing, will give your left arm for a mere bite, last meal worthy.

Till next time friends,
Mike
